ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE POULTRY CONCENTRATED FEEDS WASTE HANDLING OPTION USING ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS
Poultry farming is an emerging industry in Nigeria. However, poultry wastes in Nigeria have not been properly managed owing to several factors including ignorance, lack of technical knowledge, high cost of management, unavailability of appropriate technology, and lack of policy initiatives. The choice of disposal technique varies from farmer to farmer as well as communities. Therefore, issues related to the environment, human health, potential income gain and the quality of life for the poultry farmers as well as the people living within and around poultry production operations should be closely monitored. The aim of the current work is to examine the environmental impacts such as odour, eutrophication, air quality, land use and habitat depletion so as to offer the best management option among landfilling, composting and incineration using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) technique. Thus, results presented for odour (0.2037), Eutrophication (0.3395), Air Quality (0.1843), Land Use (0.1839), Habitat Depletion (0.00884), indicated that eutrophication is most critical over the rest of the impacts. The technique was further extended to use the impacts to offer a sustainable CAFO handling option among the handling options with result as 0.17, 0.05 and 0.77 composting, incineration and landfilling respectively. While incineration has less environmental impacts, landfilling pose more environmental impacts. However, further assessment of the risk of biological, endocrine disruption compound (EDCs) from CAFO into the environment need to be investigated.
