ANALYSIS OF TOPOLOGICAL PATTERN OF THE ROAD NETWORK IN LOKOJA METROPOLIS, KOGI STATE, NIGERIA
Evaluation of the structural pattern of road networks has emerged as a significant focus in transportation research over the past few decades. This is work is aimed at facilitating improved planning for the movement of people, goods, and activity locations. The Grid Tree Pattern index provides valuable insights into the connectivity of road networks. This study evaluated the topological formation of road networks using GTP metrics in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State. Road network and political ward boundary shape files of the study area was obtained from grid3 website. The results of GTP index analysis revealed that Lokoja A Ward has the highest index (0.2410), indicating a well-connected and dense road network. Conversely, Lokoja D Ward has the lowest GTP index (0), pointing towards a lack of connectivity in its road network. The topological coherence of the road networks ranges from minimal to moderate standards. Outcome of this research offers suitable insight into the road network design which provides a proper guide to planners and policy makers in decision for future planning and development of roads in Lokoja metropolis. It is recommended that the result of this study be integrated into broader urban planning and transportation decision-making processes in the study area to promote the development of more efficient, equitable, and sustainable networks.
