DEVELOPMENT OF AN ONLINE HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CASE STUDY KANO CITY, NIGERIA)
In large cities such as Kano in Nigeria, urban waste management faces significant challenges, including inefficiencies in waste pickup scheduling, lack of transparency, limited user engagement, lack of real-time tracking, and poor operational efficiency. To address the afore mentioned challenges, this paper proposes an online household waste management system developed using PHP Laravel, Filament, Vue.js, and MySQL guided by Agile software development methodology. The system successfully integrates waste pickup scheduling, company bidding, secure payment processing, and real-time updates into a user-friendly platform. Usability testing was carried out to ensure that all components function as expected. Total of 50 anonymous users participated in the usability testing. The overall average responses reveal that 27% of the responses are strongly agree and 35% of the responses are agree, thus suggesting that about 62% of the respondents are highly satisfied with the overall usability of the proposed household waste management system. This result shows adequate user satisfaction across all major functionalities of the system. Overall, 31% of the responses are neutral, indicating that a noticeable number of users chose Neutral across the questions. Only a small number of users, overall, 7% and 1% selected Disagree or Strongly Disagree respectively. This system demonstrates that digital technology can significantly improve urban waste management, promoting efficiency, sustainability, and user satisfaction. In the near future, mobile application version of the system could be developed for wider accessibility on mobile devices.
